Abstract:

Fast development of renewable energy sources (RES) has brought significant impact to Vietnamese power system. However, due to the weather factors, the RES have an uncertainty in power generation, that creates a significant influence on the stability of Vietnamese power system. To improve the stability of the power system with a high proportion of RES, such as wind, solar, and hydro power plants, this article proposes an optimal method for operation coordination between the RES and a pumped storage hydropower plant using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). With the assumed operational solutions, the objectives such as optimizing operational costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and minimizing energy losses for the Vietnamese power system will be calculated using the GA to determine which soultion satisfies all three mentioned objectives. From there, the role and support of Pumped-storage hydropower plant in frequency stability of a high RES system have been analyzed and evaluated in the article.
